It is with great sorrow that I must inform members of the death of John Chalke at the age of 79.
John had been ill for some time but had faced his illness with great courage and with the good humour that was really his trademark.
He was a member of the Hartfield Branch for many years and its chairman until ill health forced his retirement.
John was an indefatigable fund-raiser for the Party, carrying on a well-established tradition for Hartfield to be the top fund raiser in the Wealden Constituency.
I remember that within five minutes of my first meeting him, John had sold me two raffle tickets for his Summer Fete. The money just flew out of my wallet.
Politics has grown very adversarial but John was a true and courteous gentleman. He had opponents but not enemies.
He was predeceased by his wife but we send our deep condolences to his children Alexander and Victoria.
We owe John a great deal
